💙Mellow Momentum ... it's possible💚

Hi Reader,

May your summer be filled with shared adventures, including a few sustainable ones - I'll share more of those next time!

That's how I signed off last time, and well ... here we are!

After weeks of airports, trains, events, and catching up with wonderful people, I'm settling in and have even found some fab veggies among all the weeds – nature is amazing!

It's got me thinking about how all things grow. There are the big decisions needed to start something, but then it's the day by day intention in small ways that actually makes the difference. That's how my kale has made it this far. I may have put it in the ground, but since then … it's taken care of itself, day by day!

Momentum.

Commitment to a more sustainable future is like this too. Choosing to walk instead of grabbing a taxi. Carrying a refillable water bottle. Finding a local café instead of another chain. Turning the collar of a shirt instead of replacing it. Packing light enough that I never once wished I'd brought more clothes.

None of those choices are revolutionary on their own. But together they become a way of travelling, and living, that feels lighter, more thoughtful, and ultimately more joyful. What's a good choice you make subconsciously, that now feels, 'Well, duh! Of course!'? That's momentum at work. Onward!

Mindset.

The same spirit was at the Future Fabrics Expo. Thousands of people from across the industry gathered to explore better materials, smarter production, and more responsible ways of creating. The conversations on panels, and at booths, were so much more about, 'What's the next better step?' rather than chest thumping, 'Look what we got right!'

I love that mindset because it's exactly how meaningful change happens.

The same is true when we choose clothes, or design fabric. (Shameless plug!) Every decision matters: the fibre we like, the dyes we avoid, the people we work with, the techniques we preserve. None of those decisions has to be perfect, but each one nudges fashion in a kinder direction.

Mellow.

So this summer, chill! Sustainability isn't another item on the to-do list, it's simply noticing opportunities to make one better choice today than we made yesterday, and, more importantly, to unconsciously find ourselves repeating what counts.

Summer slows us down just enough to appreciate what really matters. That's why summer and sustainability make such good companions. Enjoy!

Hi Reader, It's been a squirly month in Saudi, and now I'm home in the US. I've been trying to get this letter finished for 2 weeks - so even though technically we're out of August, this letter is definitely from then, and still relevant to share 🙌 'Designing Tomorrow' isn’t only about imagining what’s next. Sometimes, it’s about deciding what kind of tomorrow we want to help create, choosing to stand alongside people and communities when they need us most. Behind the headlines. Recently,...

Hi Reader, Well, when I spoke last time about a summer of adventures after returning home - little did I know I'd be on the move again so quickly! Here I am in Saudi Arabia for personal reasons ... which brings a natural pause to many things Motif, but thankfully not all of it! The tech allowing us to continue meaningful work, even when disrupted, got me thinking a bit more about this interface between innovation and tradition. Recognising it's a two way street is exciting to say the least!...

Hi Reader, Yeah! I'm finally home again in sunny central Illinois! Which, looking at the state of my garden, has been VERY sunny these past few weeks. 🌞 Are you feeling the heat too? Getting back into the swing of things here is hugely helped by some super notes I received after last week's letter. The encouraging, strategic, and creative ideas shared for making kind fabrics even more accessible for designers and makers, are amazing fuel for the journey! Thank You! So ... watch this space!...
